SUMMARY:Interrupting with Care: Navigating Identity Based Harm
DESCRIPTION:“It was only a joke.” “I didn’t realize what that meant.” “My friend told me it was okay.” Young people use derogatory language and perpetuate harmful stereotypes as they test boundaries\, repeat what they hear in the media\, attempt off color humor\, and more. How do you navigate if your child is found to be using microaggressions – those words and actions that offend and hurt\, even though they may be unintended – and racism towards others? Learn some ways to have authentic conversations about race and privilege\, as well as practical strategies for dealing with when microaggressions or racism happen to your child\, to their classmate\, friend\, or if they are the ones who have used the language. Discuss and practice how to “call in” privately\, interrupt in the moment publicly\, and receive interventions gracefully. \nPlease join us on Tuesday\, May 28 from 6:30-8p for a community learning event with Rosetta Lee. We have booked the school library for those who are able to meet in person (Ms Dixon plans to!) and are hosting this event as a hybrid so if you can’t make it to campus you can join virtually. Joining virtually will require registration. We are working on childcare for those who would like to attend in person – stay tuned. It’s likely that we will have a password protected recording available afterwards for those unable to attend live. Contact Julie and Caitlin with questions or to offer help with planning and logistics of the evening: fosbchair@gmail.com.

Here is the schedule of events: \n6-7:15 pm Play math games and eat pie. Participants who try out at least 3 games or activities can enter a drawing for prizes. \n7:15 – 7:25 pm Pi recitation contest – the student who can recite the most digits of Pi by heart will win a prize. \n7:25 -7:30 Drawing for prizes – a few entries will be drawn at random. \nThe prize winners can choose from the following prizes: \n1. A gift certificate for Cafe Mox or Snapdoodle \n2. A gift certificate for a pie \n3. Being able to put pie in the face of Principal Barbara Dixon or Vice Principal Amy Acquino!!! \nThis event is built to be fun for all ages! It’s a chance to learn a few new math games and/or play some old favorites. Each kiddo in attendance is asked to have an adult who is keeping an eye on them and hopefully engaging in some math fun – ie: this is not a drop off event. \nIn order to pull this event off\, we need your help. We need volunteers to bring pie and math games. We also need volunteers to set up\, serve pie and clean up. Please consider helping out.
