SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Lenore Skenazy
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from last year! \nEven a tornado couldn’t keep us from hosting the inimitable Lenore Skenazy \nNovember 6\, 2025 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Salmon Bay K8 Library! \nBy now\, most parents have heard the news: American children are less happy and more anxious than ever before. This matters because how happy you are as a kid is the biggest predictor of how happy—and successful—you’ll be as an adult.  \nWe can fix this. For free. And fast. And Lenore Skenazy will tell you how! \nLet Grow! For 15 years\, Lenore Skenazy has led the movement for childhood independence. She has seen firsthand the transformative power of independence for kids and families. As President and CEO of Let Grow\, the world’s leading organization for childhood independence\, she advocates for kids’ freedom through policy change\, community-building\, and curriculum. She’s got ideas aplenty\, she’s not here to judge\, and she’s really\, really funny.  \nJoin us for an interactive “fireside chat” with Lenore Skenazy about the state of childhood and how you can change your kids’ lives for the better. Please note that we will be meeting in the library\, but Lenore Skenazy will be joining us live via Zoom. \nRSVP for the event and sign-up for free childcare + pizza for potty-independent children of attending adults. Walk-ins welcome\, space permitting. \nHosted by the FOSB Parent Information Exchange Committee (PIE) and Liz Hunter\, Salmon Bay parent\, Let Grow Play Club mentor\, and childhood independence advocate and writer.

SUMMARY:6th Grade Orientation with WEB Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Run by Salmon Bay 8th graders and WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) leaders\, this event is a fun gathering for 6th graders. Come join us! \n(more info\, added 8/27): \nOur school participates in the nationwide WEB Program (Where Everyone Belongs). WEB is an organization whose sole purpose is to help sixth grade students feel more comfortable\, as well as help them achieve success in their first year of middle school. \nThis orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support sixth grade students by assigning them an 8th grade WEB Mentor as a mentor during this first year of middle school. This WEB Mentor is a responsible 8th grade student who was hand selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader in our community. \nOrientation Overview: \nDrop-Off Directions: 6th Grade students should be dropped off at Salmon Bay’s lower playground at 9:45 am on Tuesday\, September 2nd. Salmon Bay staff will be present to guide them through the attendance process. 6th grade students should look for the WEB Leaders holding signs! \nPick-Up Directions: 6th Grade orientation will end around 12:00 pm. At this time 6th grade students will gather on the lower playfield and wait to be picked up by their parent/guardian. Please make a plan with your student on where to meet or how to contact you to confirm pick-up. 6th grade students may use the phone in the main office to call you if needed. If your student is walking home\, please ask them to check in with teacher Sam on the lower playground before they leave. \nSixth grade students are encouraged NOT to bring backpacks\, purses or other like items. If your student must bring a cell phone\, remind them that Salmon Bay has an “Away for the Day” policy that requires cell phones to be kept in their lockers while at school. Since students will not have been assigned lockers yet\, they should turn off any cell phones and make sure they are put away in a small backpack or pocket so they can focus on connecting with their new classmates. Please make sure your student wears comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. \nThis is a student-only function. Parents/Guardians will need to let their student(s) attend independently. \nWe look forward to meeting your student on orientation day!
