May is Bike/Walk/Roll to School Month!

Students and families are encouraged to find new routines to incorporate active transportation to and from school.

Ride to school with the Salmon Bay Bike Bus on Fridays in May!

  • The Bike Bus begins at 17th Ave NW & NW 58th St at 8:30am every Friday in May (May 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29).
  • Route: north on 17th, west on 67th, south on 18th, west into Panther Passage.
  • Adult volunteers: please sign up (we need at least 2 volunteers each morning) https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4DABAD29A4FAC16-63683656-salmon.
  • Students: join the ride along 17th solo or with family. We ride rain or shine! All bicycles and Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are welcome. Families are responsible for getting bikes home at the end of the school day (there is no afternoon Bike Bus).
  • Questions? Interested to host another route? Want this to be a year-round thing? Please reach out to meredith.rawls@gmail.com!

More reasons to ride a bike in May:

Wed May 6 is National Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day: https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/

Wed May 13 is Bike Everywhere Day in Seattle, and there will be Celebration Stations throughout the city. (Details)

On Fri May 29, FOSB Traffic Safety will host a Play Street on our School Street! Plan to stop by after school (3:45–6pm). Please stay tuned for volunteer signup and more details coming soon.

Why Walk, Bike, & Roll?

  • Health: Just 15–30 minutes of walking or biking a day helps kids build strength and develop healthy habits.
  • Focus at School: Students who walk or bike to school arrive more alert, which can boost focus and learning throughout the day.
  • Confidence: Traveling to school in a group helps children gain confidence in navigating their neighborhood safely.
  • Community: Families, neighbors, and friends connect along the way, building stronger ties to the school community.
  • Environmental Impact: Active transportation reduces traffic congestion around the school, creating a cleaner (and safer) environment.

Paying for Elementary Spring Activity Fees.

Elementary School spring student fees can now be paid through Schoolpay or by check delivered to the school. (Checks should be made payable to Friends of Salmon Bay)

Payment links for Elementary school can be accessed by clicking here or if you access SchoolPay directly or through the source please ensure you select NONPROFIT GROUPS (top left corner) to see the relevant grade links.

Salmon Bay’s staff, administration, and volunteers work together to offer many opportunities throughout the year for learning outside the school building. These enriching opportunities cost more than the funding provided by the district. Families are asked to contribute per student.

This school year student fees will be collected twice. The Fall Payment includes fees for school supplies, enrichment, full camp payments for 5th and 6th graders, camp deposits for all other grades except kindergarten. Spring Payment includes fees for Middle School Spring Enrichment Program (SEP) and camp payments for all grades other than 5th and 6th.

Scholarship Support

Partial or full scholarships are requested by emailing the school social worker Allie Ash (aeash@seattleschools.org) or the middle school counselor Rob Bright (rabright@seattleschools.org). If you wish to continue scholarship support from the fall, please notify Lara Cowles at lacowles@seattleschools.org

Earth Day Countdown!

Earth Day Countdown Kicks Off February 23!

This spring, Salmon Bay students will learn about sustainability opportunities at their school through our Earth Day Countdown initiative! Over eight weeks, students will explore topics through hands-on activities that make environmental concepts tangible and meaningful. Each week features a new theme, a quick interactive activity, and results from the previous week’s investigation.

Starting Tuesday, February 24, you’ll find our weekly display on the round table in the center of the library (Tuesdays through Fridays, through April 24). We encourage you to ask your child what they learned each week—topics include packaging and litter, rainwater collection, food waste, and more. This initiative will help increase the focus on sustainability as a core value throughout our school community.

We’d love your help creating these weekly displays and activities! Join us on Sundays starting February 22 to help prep materials for the upcoming week – kids are welcome and encouraged to participate! You can also help us set up or tear down displays in the library Mondays and Fridays after school. Sign up on SignupGenius!
