May is Bike/Walk/Roll to School Month!

Students and families are encouraged to find new routines to incorporate active transportation to and from school.

More reasons to ride a bike in May:

Wed May 6 is National Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day: https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/

Wed May 13 is Bike Everywhere Day in Seattle, and there will be Celebration Stations throughout the city. (Details)

On Fri May 29, FOSB Traffic Safety will host a Play Street on our School Street! Plan to stop by after school (3:45–6pm). Please stay tuned for volunteer signup and more details coming soon.

Why Walk, Bike, & Roll?

  • Health: Just 15–30 minutes of walking or biking a day helps kids build strength and develop healthy habits.
  • Focus at School: Students who walk or bike to school arrive more alert, which can boost focus and learning throughout the day.
  • Confidence: Traveling to school in a group helps children gain confidence in navigating their neighborhood safely.
  • Community: Families, neighbors, and friends connect along the way, building stronger ties to the school community.
  • Environmental Impact: Active transportation reduces traffic congestion around the school, creating a cleaner (and safer) environment.

Earth Day Countdown!

Earth Day Countdown Kicks Off February 23!

This spring, Salmon Bay students will learn about sustainability opportunities at their school through our Earth Day Countdown initiative! Over eight weeks, students will explore topics through hands-on activities that make environmental concepts tangible and meaningful. Each week features a new theme, a quick interactive activity, and results from the previous week’s investigation.

Starting Tuesday, February 24, you’ll find our weekly display on the round table in the center of the library (Tuesdays through Fridays, through April 24). We encourage you to ask your child what they learned each week—topics include packaging and litter, rainwater collection, food waste, and more. This initiative will help increase the focus on sustainability as a core value throughout our school community.

We’d love your help creating these weekly displays and activities! Join us on Sundays starting February 22 to help prep materials for the upcoming week – kids are welcome and encouraged to participate! You can also help us set up or tear down displays in the library Mondays and Fridays after school. Sign up on SignupGenius!
